Visiting the first national zero-carbon demonstration zone in China: Boao Forum News Center to realize "all-green electricity"

China News Service, Boao, August 6 th: Visiting the first national zero-carbon demonstration zone in China: Boao Forum News Center realizes "all green electricity"
China News Service reporter Wang Xiaobin
"The annual power consumption of the Boao Forum for Asia News Center has been reduced from 800,000 kWh to 600,000 kWh, all of which use’ green electricity’." China’s first national zero-carbon demonstration zone-Boao zero-carbon demonstration zone’s existing building greening renovation project has been completed recently. The reporter went to the field to explore China’s carbon reduction and zero-carbon practices and experiences in building operation.
Boao Zero Carbon Demonstration Zone is located on Dongyu Island, Qionghai, Hainan, where Boao Forum for Asia holds its annual meeting, covering a total area of 1.8 square kilometers. The demonstration area has carried out zero-carbon demonstration transformation from 19 sub-items in 8 aspects, such as ecological landscape, green building and green traffic.
At present, among the main buildings on Dongyu Island, the Boao Forum for Asia News Center has achieved "zero carbon" operation, and the Boao Forum for Asia International Conference Center, Boao Forum for Asia Hotel and Dongyu Island Hotel have achieved a carbon emission reduction of over 60%.

The press center of Boao Forum for Asia is about 4,300 square meters. During the annual meeting, it is the main place for media reporters to work and release the news of the annual meeting, and the rest of the time receives visiting tourists. Therefore, the news center can achieve "zero energy consumption" and can be regarded as "zero carbon" operation.
The green transformation of the building is mainly undertaken by China Railway Construction Group Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as "China Railway Construction Group"). Yu Yang, the technical director of the company’s on-site project, said that first, passive technologies such as roof insulation and sunshade blinds were adopted in the news center, and active technologies such as high-efficiency DC inverter air conditioning system and intelligent lighting system were replaced, which reduced its annual power consumption to 600,000 kWh. Secondly, let the news center use "green electricity".
Where does the 600,000-degree "green electricity" come from? Yu Yang said that relying on the sunlight overhead and the sea breeze: roof photovoltaic, facade photovoltaic and square photovoltaic floor tiles collect solar energy, and the flower fans on the cruise terminal are continuously driven by the sea breeze. "The generated electric energy, together with the’ light storage and flexibility’ energy storage system, has built a photovoltaic integrated system." Yu Yang said that the system has been estimated that "the annual power generation is about 620,000 kWh, covering the energy demand of the news center with a slight surplus".

The reporter saw in the news center that many tourists took photos and enjoyed the cool in the media work hall, and a variety of tourist souvenirs were placed in the press conference hall on the side for tourists to buy. Indoor elevators, lights, air conditioners, sausage roasters, vending machines and other electrical appliances are all in normal operation.
Since the news center, other buildings in Dongyu Island have been transformed into green buildings: giving priority to passive green building technologies such as natural ventilation and shading; Renovation of cooking equipment and gas boilers; Replacing chemical energy storage with water cold storage facilities …
In the kitchen of the hotel, the reporter noticed that all the pots and pans on the stove had been changed to electromagnetic heating, and the display on the wall flashed a bright red logo to remind the chef of the current firepower state.
After the electrification of the hotel kitchen, the Chinese chef who likes to tip the spoon said that it would take some time to adapt to the kitchen stove without open fire, but the "pot gas" of the dishes is still there. China News Service reporter Luo Yunfei photo
Tan Xuebiao, Party Secretary and Executive Director of China Railway Construction Group Electromechanical Installation Co., Ltd., said that if all the subsequent electricity is "green electricity", only the kitchen and boiler can reduce 7.5 tons of carbon dioxide emissions in one day.
"Today’s Boao venue has achieved a nearly 70% reduction in carbon emissions, but the indoor temperature has not changed, and the proportion of indoor lighting has not changed." Li Xiaojiang, former president of China Urban Planning and Design Institute and invited consultant of China Council for International Cooperation on Environment and Development, was deeply involved in the work of Boao Zero-carbon Demonstration Zone. He said at a conference held in Boao last week that the word "demonstration" decided that the green renovation of Dongyu Island was neither frugal nor cost-neutral.
Therefore, the hotels and conference centers in Dongyu Island have not changed into green three-star buildings in China at any cost, but achieved carbon balance with the help of the renewable resource utilization mode of "multi-energy complementation". This multi-energy complementary mode refers to not only photovoltaic power generation and fan power generation distributed all over the island, but also the "agricultural-photovoltaic complementary" power generation and organic fruit and vegetable supply base outside the island (photovoltaic array is arranged on agricultural land and organically combined with agricultural planting).
Li Xiaojiang believes that the series of zero-carbon transformation projects in Boao Zero-carbon Demonstration Zone have explored a set of technical integration schemes for the integrated carbon reduction transformation of buildings and regional energy in tropical areas.

According to reports, 16 of the 19 zero-carbon transformation projects in the demonstration area have been completed. It is estimated that all construction targets will be completed before the annual meeting of Boao Forum for Asia in 2024.
With the demonstration effect of Boao, Qionghai Boao Bohe Carbon Neutralization Research Institute was announced last week. The institute aims to build a platform for cooperation and exchange, and share the "zero carbon" experience for all parties with an open cooperation mechanism. (End)
